General Motors is partnering with Lithium Americas Corp. to develop a lithium carbonate mining operation at Thacker Pass, Nevada, investing $625 million. The U.S. Department of Energy will contribute a $2.3 billion loan. GM will own 38% of the venture, aiming to secure U.S. raw materials for electric vehicles while site preparations are about 50% complete.
